Khajuraho Temple Group of Monuments in India

The UNESCO World Heritage Site and considered to be one of the seven wonders of India, Khajuraho has the largest group of medieval Hindu and Jain temples or monuments, famous for their erotic sculpture.

Khajuraho a famous tourist destination in India is situated in the state of Madhya Pradesh. The place is famous for its erotic sculptures. Khajuraho adorns a great number of Hindu and Jain Temples from ancient era. Khajuraho is listed as World Heritage site by UNESCO. The temples at Khajuraho were built during the Chandella dynasty, which reached its apogee between 950 and 1050. Only about 20 temples remain; they fall into three distinct groups and belong to two different religions – Hinduism and Jainism. They strike a perfect balance between monument architecture and sculpture. The Temple of Kandariya is decorated with a profusion of sculptures that are among the greatest masterpieces of Indian art.

The Northeastern region of Rajasthan, called Dhundhar was ruled by Bargujar Rajputs and they were called Dhundhel. After some time they started calling themselves Chandelas. The ruling classes of the Kashyap Gotra were the vassals of Gurjara – Pratihara Empire of North India and they built major monuments during the period 500 – 1300CE. They built the famous Neelkanth Mahadev Temple and Kalinjar Fort. The temples at Khajuraho were built during a period of 200 years. Though Khaujraho was the cultural capital of the Chandel Kings, Khajuraho has no forts, since they never lived here. One can see very fine architectural styles in the Khajuraho temples and they are very popular due to the representation of erotic scenes depicted in the sculptures. Khajuraho, the ancient Kharjjura-vahaka represent today a distinct pattern of art and temple architecture of its own reminding one of the rich and creative period it witnessed during the Chandella rule. It was the principal seat of authority of the Chandella rulers who adorned it with numerous tanks, scores of lofty temples of sculptural grace and architectural splendour. The local tradition lists eighty-five temples but now only twenty-five are standing examples in various stages of preservation. But for Chausath-Yogini, Brahma and Mahadeva which are of granite, all the other temples are of fine grained sandstone, buff, pink or pale yellow in colour.

The sculptures here come in a great variety of interesting scenes that amuse an onlooker. These elegantly decorated temples are now being recognized as the finest example of the ancient architecture of India. The depiction of sexual life in the medieval time has been enhanced in the sculpture here. There is no doubt that the architecture of Khajuraho has no match in the world. The delicate carvings and the perfect figures carved with striking precision are remarkable. The sculptures are aesthetic and depict the various moments of love and life in those times. The carvings are an expression of stirred or enhanced sentiments of both the sexes. The magnificence with which these were constructed is a work of clever art and helps learn more about the artistic sense of the artists during those times and the religious sentiments as well. A lot of erotic or sexual art can be seen outside the walls of the Khajuraho Temples and at some places near the deities. Some walls have two layers and the outside layer of the inner wall has small erotic carvings. These erotic carvings are interpreted in many ways. Some people believe that the tantric sexual practices are depicted here. Some carvings depict sexual activities between humans and sexual themes and the changes that take place in the human body. Other carvings show the everyday life of a woman, potters, musicians, farmers etc. Some people refer to this temple as the Kama sutra temple.

The original and remaining temples are grouped into western, eastern and southern divisions. Some believe that the sculptures display certain tantric methods. Significantly, all of the carvings focus on the pleasure derived from sexual encounters, rather than on fertility and procreation. The carvings with sexual connotations are only on the outside of the temples. Inside, the carvings depict people going about ordinary daily tasks, such as women applying cosmetics, potters creating ceramic goods or musicians playing their instruments. These unique art forms are still a subject of research and study amongst art students and enthusiasts today.
